Why Are Routine Eye Examinations Essential?
Did you know an eye is composed of more than 2 million working parts and your eye muscles are the most active out of all muscles in your body? Every single component/ part is equally important for you to see clearly. Let’s take a trip through an eyeball.
First, the light passes through the cornea. The cornea is the clear front window of your eye that bends the light so that it fits through your pupil. The pupil is the small opening in the center of your iris. The iris is the colored part of your eye that dilates and constricts to adjust to different amounts of light, similar to the shutter in your camera. Then light passes through your lens behind the iris, which narrows or widens to focus light properly. Once light exits the lens, it goes through a jello like substance called the vitreous. Vitreous fills the cavity of your eye so your eye doesn’t collapse. This is where our gnat like floating friends “floaters” hang out. Then there comes your retina which is similar to the film in your camera. Retina has millions of tiny nerve endings that capture light, process and send them to your optic nerves. These cables i.e. your optic nerves carry all these signals to the back of your brain, specifically the occipital cortex, which then interprets these signals into images that you see.
Any injury to any part of your eye or any error during this process may distort and/or blur your vision.
