Women-Eye-Health-and-Safety-Month

April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month

Because women live longer than men, they are more susceptible to age-related eye diseases. Two-thirds of blindness and other visual impairments worldwide occur in females.  Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy and menopause can cause vision problems. Dry eye disease is one of the most common eye problems in post-menopausal women.

Fertility drugs and birth control pills also affect vision as these medicines are known to cause spots in one’s vision or lead to blot clots than can result in vision loss.

Also, women are more likely to be affected by certain autoimmune conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis which may result in severe dry eyes or inflammation in the eye.

So as women, are we doomed? No. There are ways to maintain healthy vision and prevent eye problems.

  • Quit smoking as it increases your chances of eye disease.

  • Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight, improve blood flow, and decrease your risks of developing cardiovascular disease.

  • Eat healthily. Nutrition is key to maintaining good eyesight. Dark green leafy vegetables that contain certain antioxidants are vital in preventing macular degeneration. Omega 3-fatty acids help with patients who have dry eyes. A well-balanced nutrition is needed for healthy eyes and vision.

  • UV protection is absolutely needed. Wear your sunglasses regularly. Protect your eyes form UV damage that can speed up cataracts or worsen macular degeneration.  Certain types of cancers may occur in the eyes, so you definitely want to minimize these risks.

  • Monitor your vision regularly. Get your eyes checked regularly by your Laguna Niguel eye doctor to maintain healthy vision. Even if you see well and don’t need any eyewear, you should still get routine eye examinations to monitor your eyes for any signs of disease.

  • Maintain good overall health. See your primary care doctor regularly especially if you are at risk for cardiovascular disease or autoimmune conditions. If you have diabetes, you must control your blood glucose levels rigidly. Diabetes is one of the most common causes of blindness.
